The Men’s Doubles League plays Monday evenings from 7pm to 9pm in the spring.

Starting June 1, summer hours will be to 8pm to 10pm.

Format:

1. League Structure, Schedule & Location

  • Structure: The NPTA Men's Doubles League runs two parallel divisions: League A and League B. The league can accommodate a maximum of 16 teams total across both divisions.
  • Match Days: Matches for each division are held on alternating Mondays.
  • Location: All matches are played at the New Providence tennis courts.
  • Season Calendar: The full season schedule and match dates are available on our website: www.newprovtennis.org.
  • Match Expectation: Every team is expected to play all other teams in their division over the course of the season on the posted dates, weather permitting.

2. Match Format & Scoring

  • Time & Length: Matches consist of 2 sets or a strict 2-hour time limit, whichever comes first. Matches may not be extended over multiple days due to time constraints (except for weather interruptions).
  • Warm-Up: Strictly limited to the first 10 minutes of the scheduled court time.
  • Tiebreakers: If sets are tied at 6-6, the USTA Coleman System 7-point tiebreaker must be used.
  • (Coleman System Rules: The first serve is delivered to the deuce court. Teams switch sides after points 1, 5, 9, 13, and so on.)
  • Split Sets: If teams split the first two sets, a tiebreaker can be played to determine the winner if time permits.
  • Equipment: The HOME team is responsible for providing one unopened can of balls for the match.

Registration:

Registration begins 3/15 and ends 4/1.

Rules of Play:

3. Substitutions & Rescheduling

  • Substitutions: No substitutions are allowed. Players must compete with their designated league partner for all matches.
  • Rescheduling: If a player has a schedule conflict and cannot make the posted date, an alternate match may be rescheduled only if all 4 players agree to a near-future date. Otherwise, the team unable to field their designated roster will default the match.

4. Lateness & Defaults

Please respect your opponents' time. Penalties for arriving late are strictly enforced:

  • 10 Minutes Late: Forfeit of the 10-minute warm-up period.
  • 15 Minutes Late: Forfeit of the 1st game.
  • 16–29 Minutes Late: One additional game is deducted for every 5 minutes the player is late.
  • 30 Minutes Late: Automatic default/forfeit of the entire match.

5. Interruptions & Etiquette

  • Breaks: Bathroom breaks are permitted at any time. A brief break (maximum of 5 minutes) is allowed between sets. Additional breaks are allowed only if all four players on the court agree.
  • Cell Phones: Devices must be set to silent or vibrate and may not be used during active play.

6. Weather & Rain Outs

  • Rain-related updates will be posted on the NPTA website 30 to 60 minutes prior to match time.
  • If a match is rained out, it is the responsibility of the players to coordinate with their opponents to reschedule and complete the match during that week.

7. Score Reporting & League Standings

  • Reporting: The HOME team must report the match results by the day following the match. Scores can be posted directly in the Men's Doubles WhatsApp group chat or submitted via email.
  • Email: If reporting via email, please send scores to the coordinator at: nitinmitra7@gmail.com.
  • Standings: Division standings are determined by a points system. Teams are awarded one (1) point for each set won. In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the coordinator will determine the winner by calculating the overall percentage of games won.

8. Advancement & Relegation

At the conclusion of the season, the final standings will determine division placement for the following season:

  • Automatic Moves: The 1st place team from League B is automatically promoted to League A. The last place team from League A is automatically relegated to League B.
  • Elimination Match: The 7th place team in League A will play a playoff match against the 2nd place team in League B. The winner of this match secures a spot in League A for the following season.
